Fear holds us back from experiencing our best life. It stops us from reaching higher and gaining more. It stops us because we don’t want to fail. We don’t want to fall down.
The truth is, you will probably fall. You might fail again and again. There are countless anecdotes of the most successful people in the world who have failed numerous times prior to finding success. They keep failing even after being successful.
How can you keep fear from running your life? Try these seven steps to see if you can conquer your fears and work on creating your best life.
Acknowledge your fear
The first step is admitting that you are afraid. Stop making excuses and hiding. Name your fear and you take away some of its power. Fear isn’t always a bad thing. Naming it can motivate you. Write it down or tell someone. Admitting it is there will give you the power to beat it.
Set goals that work for you
Too often we compare ourselves to others. We see successes and wonder why our life isn’t like that. Then we set unrealistic expectations. Keep your goals realistic for you and your life. Aim to push yourself a little bit, but not so much that your goal becomes unreachable.
Don’t compare yourself with others
Acknowledge the man behind the curtain. The wizard who projects a big bad image when he’s really just a small guy hiding from the world. No one is perfect. Stop comparing your life to someone else’s. Your experiences are unique. Embrace your unique. Your success is your success, even if it is a small one.
Remember how many successes you’ve had
When we fail or are afraid, it’s easy to think only about the bad stuff. Take the time to remember what you’ve done right. You haven’t made it this far in life by failing at everything. Remember, all successes don’t have to be big ones. Keep a small notebook to jot down things that you are proud of. When you are feeling down, read over it to remind yourself of your previous successes.
Figure out the worst that can happen
If you think about just how your might fail, you will be better prepared to overcome obstacles and bumps that might lead to that failure. And if you do fail, take the time to examine why. Mistakes and failure are part of life. Use them as learning lessons. When you use mistakes to learn, you shouldn’t be afraid to try again.
Be in the moment
Don’t let fear or worry stop you from enjoying your life. We can get so caught up worrying about what might happen that we forget to enjoy what is happening. Take the time to enjoy where you are right now. Relish the good in your life today.
Just do it
Nike has that tagline for a reason. In sports there is fear and there is failure. But there’s hard work, joy, and success. You have to push yourself in sports and in life. You’ve acknowledged your fear, set goals, and thought about what could go wrong. You’ve celebrated your successes and lived in the moment. Now it’s time to take the leap and try. That’s the only way you can grow and have more successes and more life lessons.
Courage is being scared and still doing it.
Believe in yourself and just do it.
